Genoa
Genoa was Italy's main port city-state. Since it was situated right along the ocean, it was an excellent place for sea-trading. It had the strongest economy of all the city-states. It's economy was based on trade, since it could to a lot thanks to the ocean. It was also the birthplace of the great explorer Christopher Columbus.
