Patrons
The main patrons during the Renaissance were the Borgia's and the Medici's. A patron was a very powerful and wealthy family. The Medici came to power when the head of the largest bank in Europe seized control of the government. He did so because the government couldn't pay off its debts. That made the Medici family very rich. They helped improve the economy of Florence and made it the most cultural city-state in Italy.
The Borgia's are known for being very treacherous. The head of the Borgia's became a Pope. He sold divorces for many kings and queens for lots of money. They imprisoned people who objected them. They basically controlled the Papal States.
